I am opposed to the closing of the Neuro-Respiratory Services Unit at Fairmont Hospital; I believe that the County and Medical Center should continue to be responsible for providing care for this vulnerable population. If the County would lose money each year providing care at the level it believes is necessary for these patients, why would/could they be cared for as well in the private sector, when the funding sources (Medicare/MediCal) would be the same?
 
In addition, it is crucial that the Fairmont facility be maintained and upgraded and that it continue all of the services currently being offered there. In the future, more, not fewer, skilled nursing facility beds will be needed, and it is important that the County provide some of this level of care.
